Supervising Today's Students: Supervising Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Supervising student employees takes a special set of skills. The STS certificate program — offered by Learning and Development in partnership with the Pomerantz Career Center and UI STEP — helps UI faculty and staff:

  • Hire, orient, and motivate student employees effectively

  • Provide impactful training and development opportunities

  • Lead and support students to achieve success in their roles

  • Contribute to the University of Iowa’s strategic goal of undergraduate student success

STS: Supervising Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may search for student employment on campus, but do not want to disclose that they're on the spectrum. Without knowing a student, how can you accurately identify a student's strengths and skills in the interview? In this session, we'll learn about the characteristics of ASD, the benefits of employing students with ASD, some of the challenges they may face in the workplace, and how to navigate the process of hiring and supervising students with ASD. This workshop will provide tips for current and potential supervisors of students with ASD and leave time for questions and discussion among attendees and facilitators.
