The Future of Filmmaking: VFX, AI, and Visual Storytelling with Matt Whelan

Matt Philip Whelan is an Emmy-winning Visual Effects Supervisor, second unit director, and classical animator based in Canada. With over 15 years of experience across narrative films, episodic television, and commercials, he blends traditional storytelling with cutting-edge digital techniques.

A graduate of Sheridan College’s classical animation program, Whelan has contributed to major productions worldwide. He earned a Primetime Emmy® and a VES Award for his work on Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial, where he oversaw complex, photoreal VFX recreations of post-Katrina New Orleans.

Other notable credits include supervising visual effects on Netflix’s Murder Mystery 2, Apples Never Fall, American Gods, and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah. He also regularly contributes as a second unit director for VFX-heavy sequences and directs animated shorts and commercials. Whelan’s work stands at the intersection of visual storytelling and technical innovation, with a focus on virtual production and AI-assisted workflows.
